The world of Naruto is one filled with incredible powers, astonishing creatures, and weapons that make all of zero sense in any realistic context. In this list, we summarize all noteworthy swords of the Narutoverse, as well as rank them in order of least to most powerful.
20. Raido’s “Kokuto”
The Kokuto is a unique, matte black katana wielded by Namiashi Raido, one of the Tokubetsu Jonin comprising the Elite Hokage Guard Platoon. As one of the few shinobi entrusted with the 4th Hokage’s Flying Raijin Jutsu and a specialized assassin, Raido has used this blade for countless assassination missions off-screen, and during the battle against Kakuzu on-screen.
Although a deadly weapon, the blade is ultimately not that special beyond its wielder and poison coating.
19. Darui’s “Cleaver”
The large and unruly slab of metal wielded by the 4th Raikage’s bodyguard has no distinct name, but its versatility is quite notable. With three hinges placed along its length, Darui can fold down his cleaver when its not in use, and the chakra-conductive properties of the metal allow him to channel his formidable lightning-chakra through it for increased lethality.
Particularly interesting is the blade’s capability to maintain that chakra charge even after being separated from him.
18. Mt. Myoboku’s “Stone Swords”
These blades, wielded by Jiraiya against the 6 Paths of Pain, have a very morbid story behind them. Formed from the petrified, statuesque remains of those who failed their Senjutsu training on the mountain, these blades have Senjutsu chakra permanently infused into their edge. As such, even the slightest contact is devastatingly effective, shredding their targets apart.
17. Mifune’s “Kurosawa”
Kurosawa is the personal weapon of the Leader of the Land of Iron’s Samurai, Mifune. Much like Raido’s Kokuto, this blade does not have any particularly unique features of its own to make it stand out from the average katana.
However, as the sword of a Samurai as devoted as Mifune, the blade is one with the man, and has become a legendary weapon in their nation for the feats he has achieved with it. The elderly samurai has referred to it as a “Meito”, showing respect to the blade and acknowledging it as part of his own identity.
16. Shichiseiken
The Shichiseiken, while certainly being an unorthodox “sword”, is also one of the most dangerous in the Naruto world. As one of the Five Treasured Tools of the Sage of Six Paths himself, the weapon’s capabilities are otherworldly.
It possesses the power to curse a target and place them in a state where uttering their single most spoken word will then seal them inside another of the Treasured Tools, the Benihisago.
As powerful as this ability is however, the Shichiseiken is little more than a shiny metal sheet without the monstrous chakra reserves necessary to use it, as well as being dependent on two other Treasured Tools to fulfill its complete function. For these reasons, it can go no higher on this list.
15. White Light Chakra Sabre
The White Light Chakra Sabre is a tanto which was originally owned by Sakumo Hatake, the White Fang of Konoha and father of Kakashi Hatake. Despite being a mostly ordinary short sword, the Sabre became infamous for the white streak of chakra it would leave behind when swung by Sakumo, which is actually what earned him his nickname in the first place.
Passed on to the great shinobi’s son after his death, the Sabre was a young Kakashi’s partner for many a mission, until it finally met its end during the Battle of Kannabi Bridge, during the Third Great Shinobi War.
14. Sasuke’s “Kusanagi”
The chokuto wielded by Sasuke Uchiha for most of Shippuden was often referred to as the “Sword of Kusanagi” by him. Much like several other weapons on this list however, Sasuke’s version of the Kusanagi doesn’t have any particularly outstanding abilities or features.
The blade is simply highly durable and chakra-conductive, allowing Sasuke to amp it to extreme levels with his manipulation of lightning-nature chakra. Once again, a formidable sword made as recognizable as it is due to the skill of its wielder.
13. Orochimaru’s “Kusanagi”
Unlike his protégé’s version, Orochimaru’s Sword of Kusanagi is much more formidable on its own merits. The blade is capable of cutting through almost anything, as witnessed when Monkey King Enma admitted it would even hurt him in his Diamond-Hard Staff form.
Moreover, this Kusanagi has the ability to rapidly extend and retract its blade’s length to an extraordinary degree, thus making it a viable long-range weapon as well.
In the possession of Orochimaru, the blade also showed transformative capabilities, turning into a snake to return to him. However, as seen in its inability to pierce Naruto’s 4-tailed chakra cloak, the Kusanagi has its limits.
12. Killer B’s “Supervibrato Lightning Release Swords”
The Supervibrato Lightning Release Swords are a special style of blade crafted and used almost exclusively in the Hidden Cloud Village. Each sword’s unique shape makes them akin to oversized and highly deadly needles with bladed edges. That is, both edges are fatally sharp, and the blades are streamlined perfectly to be thrown as projectiles.
Killer Bee’s Kenjutsu style, the “Acrobat”, is the ultimate showcase of how deadly these blades are, especially when imbued with lightning chakra, vibrating them at a frequency that takes the cutting and piercing power beyond even wind release techniques.
11. Tobirama Senju’s “Raijin no Ken”
The Sword of the Thunder God is an utterly extraordinary weapon for various reasons. Crafted by the Second Hokage himself, this sword is for all intents and purposes, an overpowered lightsaber.
The “blade” consists of pure electrical energy in its rawest form rather than chakra and is capable of cutting through almost anything, including ninjutsu like the Rasengan and Chidori. Paired with its ability to output long range bursts and rings of lightning, the Raijin no Ken is a truly formidable weapon, limited only by the skill of its wielder. Which is exactly what lead to its destruction at the hands of team 7 after it was stolen by a misguided Idate Morino.
Regardless of its potential, the fact that this sword was broken by a team of genin because of its wielder’s incompetence means the Raijin no Ken can go no higher on this list.
10. Nuibari
The first of the Seven Swords of the Mist to make our list, Nuibari is a longsword in name, though it resembles an oversized needle much more. In fact, it’s even used as such by its main wielder, Kushimaru, who uses the sword to penetrate through multiple targets and then “sews” them together using a thread attached to the blade’s hilt. The blade has also been known to be thrown like a javelin, piercing through several targets in one go.
9. Shibuki
Another of the Seven Swords of the Mist, Shibuki is perhaps the least subtle of the Seven. The blade has a large scroll affixed to its dull side, which unfurls to reveal innumerable explosive tags stored within. While the wielder uses the sharp side as any blade, the blunt edge detaches and ignites explosive tags whenever it comes in contact with a target, allowing for a truly explosive style of swordsmanship.
8. Kabutowari
Translating literally to the “Helmet Splitter”, Kabutowari isn’t even truly a sword, but its deadliness earns it a spot amongst the Mist’s Seven. This weapon consists of a giant axe and hammer, linked together by a leather-like rope at their hilts.
Typically, the way to use Kabutowari that has been shown is to slam the axe’s edge into a target and then slam the axe with the hammer. The resulting force is so overwhelming that little has ever withstood a strike from the Helmet Splitter.
7. Kubikiribocho
The Executioner’s Blade, most recognizable for being wielded by Zabuza Momochi of the Mist’s Seven, is a much less flashy weapon than its siblings. Despite its massive size and multiple circular hollows meant for decapitation, the weapon’s special ability is more defensive than one might think. The Kubikiribocho possesses the ability to repair itself using the iron in its victims’ blood, making it a weapon that can survive almost anything.
6. Hiramekarei
Hiramekarei is yet another of the Mist Seven which isn’t truly a sword at all. The weapon possesses a large, curved and double handled blade, making its bulky appearance quite reminiscent of a fish. This weapon’s true potential however, lies in its extreme level of chakra conductivity.
Unlike any other weapon in its realm, Hiramekarei is capable of solidifying the chakra its wielder channels into it and shift its physical dimensions to whatever they desire. The unpredictability of the weapon alone makes it one not to be trifled with when in the right hands.
5. Kiba
Though counted as a single sword, the Kiba are in fact two identical blades used in conjunction. The cutting power of these blades is highly enhanced due to them being imbued with lightning, much like a less powerful version of the Raijin no Ken. Thanks to their lightweight form and multiple edges, the Kiba are perfect for an agile and quick-striking fighting style.
4. Samehada
Finally, we have the infamous Sharkskin, Samehada, said to be the most terrifying of the Mist’s Seven. The true danger of fighting Samehada lies not only in its ability to shave away the chakra of whoever it touches, but also the fact that this sword is actually sentient.
This sentience allows Samehada to be dangerous on a whole new level, acting independently of its wielder to ensure their survival, such as when it feigned betraying Kisame and siding with Killer B so the former could fake his death.
Not to mention the fusion ability which allows Kisame and Samehada to merge into the being known as the tailed beast with no tail. Samehada’s bond with its wielder raises the sword to a level few weapons can hope to match
3. Sasuke’s “Kagutsuchi”
The Sword of Kagutsuchi is an unorthodox weapon, in that it is fully a chakra construct of Sasuke’s Final Susano, imbued with the flames of Amaterasu. Little needs to be said about this weapon and how overpowered it is. Already having the force of Indra’s reincarnation behind it, the sword burns with the everlasting black flames, ensuring that its targets do not survive.
2. Itachi’s “Totsuka Blade”
Just like his younger brother, Itachi’s Susano possesses a chakra construct in the form of a blade with absolutely astonishing power. The Totsuka Blade that his Susano wields appears as a gourd of sake, from which the exiting fluid is shaped into the form of a sword.
The true threat of this sword lies not in the blade alone, but the gourd it extends from. Any who are hit with the Totsuka blade are pulled inside of and sealed within the gourd, trapped in a drunken dream-like state for eternity.
1. Sword of Nunoboko
Said to be the most powerful weapon in existence by Obito Uchiha, the Sword of Nunoboko was first wielded by Hagoromo Otsutsuki himself, and is formed by combining the Truth-Seeking Orbs. While the sword is indeed a formidable weapon, Obito’s own words imply that its full potential can only be drawn forth by one with an iron will, strong emotions and control over them.
As the Uchiha himself is an empty husk on an emotional level, with an internal war that eventually makes him switch sides, the Sword of Nunoboko’s true power has never truly been observed on-screen. Even so, its history and the circ*mstances surrounding it alone lend plenty of credence to how devastating the weapon may be in the right hands.
